Summit hikes on Senja today

Segla, Hesten, Barden, Grytetippen and Husfjellet are the summits most people come for. Each gets one assessment for today’s daylight: good day, with care or not today. It uses the forecast for the summit itself from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (wind, precipitation, temperature, cloud), the avalanche forecast from NVE, weather alerts and a computed snow line.

The assessment is about weather and conditions, not about you. These are alpine hikes: the paths are steep, unmarked and unsecured, and winter calls for equipment and experience. In the evening the page shows tomorrow.

The assessment uses the forecast for the summit in daylight, the avalanche danger and the snow line. It does not replace your own judgement: the paths are neither marked nor secured, and winter calls for equipment and experience.

Questions and answers

What does “with care” mean?

Something you should know before you go: strong wind on the summit, snow on the summit, precipitation, fog, avalanche danger in steep terrain, severe cold or little daylight. Read the reason next to each summit and judge for yourself.

What gives “not today”?

Wind of 15 m/s or more on the summit, thunder, avalanche danger 3 or higher, or a red weather alert. Then the summits are not the place to be, whatever your experience.

Where do the hikes start?

Segla, Hesten, Barden and Grytetippen start in Fjordgård, Husfjellet in Skaland. Parking and toilets are listed under Places.

How is the snow line computed?

From the season and today’s temperature at the weather spots, the same rule as the map on the front page. It is approximate; when it lies below the summit, expect snow and ice on the upper part.

Does the assessment apply in winter?

Yes, but in winter all five are winter hikes through avalanche terrain. Then the avalanche forecast matters most, and you need equipment, experience and avalanche knowledge.
