Questions and answers

Where does the data come from?

From the Norwegian Coastal Administration’s open AIS stream. AIS is a system in which vessels broadcast their own position, speed and name. The list updates every 15 seconds and shows vessels heard in the last 20 minutes.

Why is a vessel missing?

Not every boat has AIS, and small boats with a simple transmitter only appear while they are moving. Coverage can also be weaker far out at sea and behind high mountains.

Can I see where Hurtigruten is right now?

Yes. When Hurtigruten is in the waters around Senja, the ship is in the list with speed and destination, and on the map on the front page. Departures from Finnsnes are on the Ferries and express boats page.

What do “Moored” and “At anchor” mean?

That is the navigation status the ship itself broadcasts over AIS.
